Dr. Ali M. Hashmi is Tenured Professor and Chairman, Department of Psychiatry, King Edward Medical University, Lahore, Pakistan and Advisor, Global Institute of Human Development, Pakistan. Dr. Hashmi has over 25 years of experience in assessment and management of all kinds of mental health conditions globally (primarily in the United States and Pakistan). The Department of Psychiatry at King Edward Medical University and it’s affiliated Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry are one of the first Child and Adolescent Mental Health training programs in Pakistan’s history and currently the only training program in Pakistan’s most populous province of Punjab. Dr. Hashmi is the author of more than 60 peer reviewed national and international scientific publications as well as a prolific author. His columns on mental health, history, ethics and philosophy are published regularly in national and international newspapers and websites and he is also the author of 5 books on literature and poetry. Dr. Hashmi has also served in multiple advisory roles to local and provincial governments and to the government of Pakistan and has helped create and draft multiple policies related to mental health law, regulation, legislation and implementation. He was recently asked by the government of Pakistan to help draft the first ever policy to regulate the practice of psychotherapy and counseling in Pakistan’s history. The policy has been passed by Pakistan’s parliament and is in the process of being implemented. Dr. Hamdani is an accomplished expert in the field of global child and adolescent mental health, with a particular focus on low-resource settings such as Pakistan. With over a decade of dedicated experience, Dr. Hamdani has led numerous groundbreaking randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that have significantly advanced research and policy impact in this critical area. His research explores mental health stratification, leveraging diverse markers—biological, psychological, social, and digital—to enable early identification and tailored treatment for anxiety and depression. By developing targeted treatments, Dr. Hamdani aims to ensure that individuals receive appropriate interventions precisely when needed, thus maximizing treatment efficacy and improving outcomes. His work reflects a commitment to addressing the unique challenges faced by vulnerable populations, particularly children and adolescents, in accessing quality mental health care globally.

Dr. Huma is an aspiring global mental health researcher specializing in the implementation of task-shifting approaches to scale up child and adolescent mental health interventions, particularly in low-income settings. Currently serving as a Research Assistant Professor at GIHD-STMU, Pakistan, Dr. Huma possesses extensive experience coordinating school-based cluster randomized controlled trials. Dr. Huma’s academic interests focus on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)-based adolescent mental health interventions with the aim of understanding which components of the intervention are effective for whom, under what conditions, and why to improve emotional symptoms in adolescents attending low-resource schools in Pakistan. Furthermore, Dr. Huma leads the multi-national network on youth mental health under the Being Mental Health Initiative, aiming to transform youth mental health at the regional level.
